At London Bridge station, you see these large plastic shields which I like to call body bumpers. I believe they are there so crowds don't smash you into the curved walls or so you don't bump your head as you rush turning the corner toward the escalators. Definitely an afterthought safety solution in the original design of the station which is otherwise very well thought through.
