Looking up at the stairway reminded me of that shot in Close Encounters of the Third Kind where the UFO's door opens and you see the silhouettes of the ET aliens walk down. The contrast of light between the underground and outside is so large the strong overhead lights blast into your eyes like two little suns as you walk up the stairs.
